Implementation of the National Biodiversity Strategic Action Plan
- Sri Lanka is a signatory to the International Convention on Bio-diversity which was formulated to coincide with the 'Earth Summit' which was held in the year 1992. In accordance with the commitments of the convention, Sri Lanka has carried out a number of programmes from the year 1992 up to 2016 for the conservation of Bio-diversity. The National Bio-diversity Expert Committee, with the participation of the relevant stakeholders, has also prepared a National Bio-diversity Conservation Action Plan with Bio-diversity Strategies to be implemented during the period 2016 to 2022. Accordingly, the proposal made by H.E. the President Maithripala Sirisena, in his capacity as the Minister of Mahaweli Development and Environment, for the implementation of the National Bio-diversity Conservation Strategic Action Plan for 2016-2022, with the objective of conserving Bio-diversity in Sri Lanka, sustainable use of Bio-diversity and the equitable sharing of the benefits accrued, was approved by the Cabinet.
