Dam Safety & Water Resources Plans which could be utilized for the Future Development Activities
- The necessity for an updated National Water Resources Development and Management Plan for Sri Lanka, has surfaced, in order to achieve the current targets and objectives of the development of the country. The Mahaweli Master Plan has also not been updated since 1978. The three (03) Water Resource Plans namely; the National Plan of Water Usage, updated Mahaweli Water Resources Development Plan and the Integrated Water Resources Development Plan of the Mundeni Aru Basin have been prepared under the Dam Safety and Water Resources Planning Project commenced in the year 2007. Therefore, the proposal made by H.E. the President Maithripala Sirisena, in his capacity as the Minister of Mahaweli Development and Environment to treat the above mentioned plans as a National Document containing Guidelines in Water Sector Development in Sri Lanka and to keep the 03 Plans in the custody of the National Planning Department, to be used as Guidelines by any institution engaged in the Water Resources Development Field in Sri Lanka, was approved by the Cabinet.
