Establishment of small scale Solar Power Plants under the Soorya Bala Sangramaya - Stage 2

- In order to cater to the increasing demand in electricity and also to ensure the energy security of the country, diversification of energy generating sources is essential. Although there is a high demand from investors to establish Solar Power Plants, it is only 60Mw which has been recommended technologically, for absorption to the medium voltage of the National Grid during this year. Therefore, the proposal made by Hon. Ranjith Siyambalapitiya, the Minister of Power and Renewable Energy, to implement a new project called 'Soorya Bala Sangramaya' - Stage 2, and to enable the selection of investors who have come forward to establish solar power plants of 1Mw for the 60Mw solar power capacity, through a competitive bidding process which is fair and transparent, was approved by the Cabinet.
