Introduction of the Global Positioning System for Train Operations with more efficiency and safety

- The necessity for the introduction of Modern Technology for Sri Lanka Railways to bring out improvement in the efficiency and safety of train operations, has been identified. Accordingly, with a view to accruing benefits to both the Sri Lanka Railways and the General Public, the proposal made by Hon. Nimal Siripala de Silva, the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation to procure Train Operating and Information System (TOIS) based on the Global Positioning System (GPS) from the Ministry of Defence through which the exact locations and speed of trains could be viewed more preciously on global information based maps and combining it with the existing train time indicating system, was approved by the Cabinet.
