Extension of the Surgical/Medical Units in the Teaching Hospital - Karapitiya, Galle
- The Teaching Hospital - Karapitiya, Galle is the major hospital in the Galle District and it provides services to patients from the Districts of Matara and Hambantota of the Southern Province and as well as to patients from other Provinces. This hospital consists of 60 wards with 1,838 beds and 24 Specialist Units. The number of patients receiving treatment from this hospital and the number of surgeries done have increased significantly, over the past several years. Therefore, the proposal made by Hon.(Dr.) Rajitha Senaratne, the Minister of Health, Nutrition and Indigenous Medicine, to increase the total number of beds in the hospital by 300 and to construct a 10 storeyed building with an Orthopaedic Ward to enable 130 additional surgeries to be done per week, a Plastic Surgery and Burns Unit, 02 Ear - Nose - Throat (ENT) Units, Gastro Enterology and Genito-Urology Surgery Units, a Rheumatology Unit, a Vitreo-Retinal Surgery Unit, and also a Paediatric Cardiology Unit, Nephrology, Neurology and Opthalmology wards with facilities for the treatment of children, at an estimated cost of Rs.1,401.7 Million, was approved by the Cabinet.
