Restructuring of the Department of Labour and the Drafting of a Service Minute for Labour Officers

- The private sector renders an immense contribution to the economic growth of the country and a huge task is being carried out by the Department of Labour to maintain industrial peace, which is required to obtain the services of the private sector efficiently and qualitatively. The Minister of Labour and Trade Union Relations has appointed an Officials' Committee to study the problems that arise in providing the services of the Department efficiently and with high quality and to make recommendations to restructure the Department to suit the present day needs and the recommendation process of the said Committee is at its final phase. Simultaneous with the said process, an Officials' Committee comprising of the officials of the relevant ministries and the departments, has also been appointed to draft a Service Minute for the Labour Officers' Service, for the improvement of the service conditions of the Labour Officers in the Department of Labour. Accordingly, the Cabinet noted the information submitted by Hon. W.D.J. Seneviratne, the Minister of Labour and Trade Union Relations, to the effect that the Reports of the above two (02) Officials' Committees will be submitted to the Cabinet in near future.
