Amendment of the Sri Lanka Disaster Management Act, No.13 of 2005

- 'The National Council for Disaster Management' and 'the Disaster Management Centre' were established in the year 2005, under the provisions of the Sri Lanka Disaster Management Act, No.13 of 2005, as institutional structures which function to manage the disaster situations that occur due to natural and human activities and a separate Ministry was established in the year 2010 for the subject of Disaster Management. The likelihood of the occurrence of disasters has rapidly increased in the recent past and taking into consideration the practical difficulties encountered by the Disaster Management Centre and the Ministry of Disaster Management in carrying out the responsibilities and functions entrusted under the above Act, the proposal made by Hon. Anura Priyadarshana Yapa, the Minister of Disaster Management, to amend the Sri Lanka Disaster Management Act, to enable the performance of the functions mentioned in the said Act with proper coordination and collaboration, was approved by the Cabinet.
