Task Force on Legal and Judicial Causes of Prison Overcrowding

- The joint proposal made by Hon.(Dr.) Wijayadasa Rajapaksa, the Minister of Justice; and Hon. D.M. Swaminathan, the Minister of Prison Reforms, Rehabilitation, Resettlement and Hindu Religious Affairs, to establish a Task Force co-chaired by the Secretary, Ministry of Justice; and the Secretary, Ministry of Prison Reforms, Rehabilitation, Resettlement and Hindu Religious Affairs with the representation of the representatives of other institutions including the relevant Departments, to identify the legal and judicial causes of prison overcrowding and to obtain proposals on amendments to be made to the existing laws and procedures from the above Task Force, for the reduction of overcrowding prevalent in the Prisons, was approved by the Cabinet.
