Obtaining Indian Grant Assistance for the Development activities in the District of Hambantota, under the ‘Wewak Samaga Gamak’ Programme
- The Government of India has agreed to provide a grant of Rs.300 million to Sri Lanka, for the development of fisheries and other livelihood development activities associated with the District of Hambantota. It is expected to use a portion of the said grant, under the ‘Wewak Samaga Gamak’ Programme, for the development of model fishing villages. Accordingly, the proposal made by Hon. Mahinda Amaraweera, the Minister of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development, to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka and the Republic of India, to provide support assistance for the livelihoods of the fishing and agricultural communities in the Hambantota District, was approved by the Cabinet.
