Relocation of the Welikada Prison
- Most of the Prisons in Sri Lanka are located in the middle of the relevant cities on lands which possess higher economic importance. Under the programme for relocation of Prisons situated island-wide, it is proposed to establish the Welikada prison and its sub units in a different location. The Welikada Prison Complex is comprised of 04 sections segregated from each other and the proposal made by Hon. Patali Champika Ranawaka, the Minister of Megapolis and Western Development, to acquire the land owned by the BCC Lanka Limited, situated in close proximity to the Supreme Courts Complex, for the establishment of the Remand Prison where the suspects who have to be produced in Courts frequently are detained, was approved by the Cabinet.
