Relocation of City-centered Prisons to Interior Areas with more Space
- The Government has recognized the necessity of undertaking urgent reforms in the prisons with a view to converting prisons into correction centers. Under this programme, the priority has been given to relocate the city-centered prisons in the less populated areas. Accordingly, the proposal made by Hon. D.M Swaminathan, the Minister of Prison Reforms, Rehabilitation, Resettlement and Hindu Religious Affairs, to entrust preparation of design and consultancy activities pertaining to the relocation of Colombo, Galle, Matara, Badulla, Trincomalee and Batticaloa Prisons, to Government owned Construction Agencies, as recommended by the Committee appointed to expedite the prison relocation activities, was approved by the Cabinet.
