Bilateral Agreement between Ukraine and Sri Lanka on Mutual Legal Assistance in Criminal Matters
- It is of paramount importance to provide International Legal Assistance in Criminal matters in the process of preventing such crimes. The Mutual Assistance in Criminal Matters Act, No. 25 of 2002 provides to enter into Bilateral Agreements with foreign countries to provide assistance to those countries by Sri Lanka and vice versa on Mutual Assistance in Criminal matters. Accordingly, with a view to improving the effectiveness of the law enforcement of both parties in the matters of investigation, prosecution, prevention of crime and confiscation of money generated out of criminal proceeds,the proposal made by Hon. (Dr) Wijayadasa Rajapaksa, the Minister of Justice, to enter into an Agreement on Mutual Legal Assistance in Criminal matters, between Sri Lanka and Ukraine, was approved by the Cabinet.
