Introduction of a Mode of Transportation along the Colombo Canal Network as a Tourism Promotional Service
- The Colombo Canal Network of 43 km in length, is presently maintained by the Sri Lanka Land Reclamation and Development Corporation. This canal network, which has not been used for a productive purpose for many years, has been identified as suitable, for the transportation of goods and passengers, in order to ease the traffic congestion and also to promote the Tourism industry. Accordingly, the proposal made by Hon. Patali Champika Ranawaka, the Minister of Megapolis and Western Development, to implement a project for the purpose which includes the introduction of a mode of transportation along the Colombo canals, water related recreational activities along the canals using boats and commercial activities such as Floating Markets along the canals through the Sri Lanka Land Reclamation and Development Corporation, was approved by the Cabinet.
