Accelerated Irrigation Development Project in the Moneragala District ('Wellassa Navodaya')

- Moneragala District is considered as the second largest district in the country and majority of its population is engaged in agriculture as their livelihood. Therefore, it has been planned to implement an accelerated development programme to rehabilitate the existing irrigation infrastructure of that area. Accordingly, the proposal made by Hon. Vijith Vijayamuni Zoysa, the Minister of Irrigation and Water Resources Management, to implement the 'Wellassa Navodaya' Accelerated Irrigation Development Project designed with the main objective of uplifting the standard of living of the farmers in the said district, through increasing the agricultural productivity, during the period of four years from 2016-2019, was approved in principle by the Cabinet.
