Ratification of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities

- 'The International Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities' was adopted in the year 2006 by the United Nations General Assembly, in keeping with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) and the International Conventions on Human Rights. Sri Lanka has become a signatory to that Convention in the year 2007 and having considered that the enforcement of that Convention in Sri Lanka would be more important for the best interests of the persons with disabilities, the proposal made by Hon. S.B. Dissanayake, the Minister of Social Empowerment and Welfare, to ratify the said Convention, was approved by the Cabinet.
