Introduction the Law on "National Minimum Wage" for the Private Sector Employees

- As per the requests made by the members of the National Labour Advisory Council as well various trade unions, the Government has decided to impose a National Minimum Wage for employees in the private sector through a separate law. The existing minimum wage has been determined considering the Minimum Monthly Poverty Line limit of Rs.4,000/- per head. Taking into consideration the present requirements, the proposal made by Hon. W.D.J. Seneviratne, the Minister of Labour and Trade Union Relations, to draft legislation to set Rs.10,000/- as the monthly minimum wage, was approved by the Cabinet.
