Project for Mainstreaming Biodiversity Conservation and Sustainable Use for improved Human Nutrition and Well-being
- A grant of Rs.116 million has been awarded to Sri Lanka by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) and Global Environmental Facility(GEF), to implement the above mentioned project. The main objectives of this project are the use of the unique biodiversity in Sri Lanka in a sustainable manner, enhancing the livelihoods of rural people while ensuring food security, improving the nutritional levels of the people and thereby motivating them towards biodiversity conservation. Accordingly, the proposal made by H.E. the President, Maithripala Sirisena, in his capacity as the Minister of Mahaweli Development and Environment, to implement this project up to the year 2017, in three pilot areas, namely, Kalawana Divisional Secretariat Division in the Ratnapura District, Ududumbara Divisional Secretariat Division in the Kandy District and Giribawa Divisional Secretariat Division in the Kurunegala District, was approved by the Cabinet.
