Project on Mainstreaming Biodiversity Conservation and Use in Sri Lankan Agro-ecosystems for Livelihoods and Adaptation to Climate Changes
- A grant of Rs.172 million has been awarded to Sri Lanka by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and Global Environmental Facility (GEF) to implement the above mentioned project to adapt to climate changes. The main objective of this project is to find solutions for the adverse impact of climate changes upon the unique biodiversity existent in Sri Lanka. Accordingly, the proposal made by H.E the President Maithripala Sirisena, in his capacity as the Minister of Mahaweli Development and Environment, to implement the above project up to the year 2017, through three (03) special agro systems selected as pilot areas, namely, an Ovita System in the Millaniya Divisional Secretariat Division in the Kalutara District, an Upcountry Home Garden System in the Ududumbara Divisional Secretariat Division in the Kandy District and a Cascade Tank System in the Giribawa Divisional Secretariat Division in the Kurunegala District, was approved by the Cabinet.
