Establishment of Renal Units to provide specialized care to the patients of the Chronic Kidney Disease of Unknown Aetiology
- Chronic Kidney Disease of Unknown Aetiology (CKD/CKDu) is considered to be the biggest challenge experienced by the health sector of Sri Lanka at present. As of now, the total number of patients reported in the country is around 26,470 and the majority of them are reported from the districts such as Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Kurunegala, Badulla, Matale, Trincomalee, Ampara and Mullaitivu. The proposal made by Hon. Dr. Rajitha Senaratne, the Minister of Health, Nutrition and Indigenous Medicine, to construct Renal Units in the following hospitals with facilities for early identification of patients in the districts where the disease is prone and also to provide facilities for dialysis and kidney transplant, within the next three years from 2016 - 2018, at a total cost of Rs.4,263 million, was approved by the Cabinet:

* Teaching Hospital, Jaffna
* Provincial General Hospital, Badulla
* Teaching Hospital, Baticaloa
* District General Hospital, Trincomalee
* District General Hospital, Hambantota
