Increasing the Representation of Women in Local Authorities

- Although the women constitute 50% - 51% of the population of Sri Lanka, their representation as elected representatives in the Parliament, Provincial Councils and Local Government Authorities is about 5% of the total representatives elected for the said Institutions. Accordingly, in keeping with the pledges given at the last Presidential Election and Parliamentary Election to reserve 25% of the representation for women, in Local Authorities and Provincial Councils, the proposal made by the Prime Minister Hon. Ranil Wickremasinghe, to amend the Local Authorities (Special Provisions) Act, No.21 of 2012, was approved by the Cabinet.
