Establishment of the Southern Provincial Development Board

- The task of the Ministry of Southern Development is to uplift the standard of living of the people residing in the region utilizing the available economic resources in the area in a sustainable manner, coordination of regional development activities, creation of new services and investments, generation of employment opportunities in the region through improving existing service centres and industries, and increase of economic development. In order to accomplish this task efficiently and effectively, the proposal made by Hon. Sagala Ratnayake, the Minister of Southern Development, to establish the Southern Provincial Development Board, and to determine Galle, Matara, Hambantota and Moneragala districts as well as Kolonna and Embilipitiya Divisional Secretariat Divisions of the Rathnapura district as areas falling under the authority of this Board for its activities, and also to draft legislation for the purpose, was approved by the Cabinet.
