Implementation of the University of Ruhuna Township Development Project

- The Government has planned to develop a University Township with all amenities found in a modern University, treating the University of Ruhuna which is situated in the Wellamadama area in close proximity to the Matara town, as its centre. Accordingly, it has been planned to develop two subprojects under this project, namely the development of Ruhuna University Township and the common amenities therein and the development of a Marine and Fresh Water Aquariums and related infrastructure, at an estimated investment of Rs.2,512.8 million

The following development programmes are proposed to be implemented under the proposed first subproject:

* demarcation and the declaration of the boundaries of the University Township;

* construction of an irrigation canal connecting the Kumbalgama Lake and the Devundar Lagoon and the establishment of a walking track along one of its banks; and

* construction of a swimming pool in the University Township and development of sports and recreational facilities around the area.

Accordingly, the proposal made by Hon. Lakshman Kiriella, the Minister of Higher Education and Highways, to implement the first subproject under the Ruhunu University Township Development Project, at an investment of Rs.556.6 million, was approved by the Cabinet.
