Implementation of the Second Phase of the Pipe Laying Project from Andaragasyaya underground tank to Gonnoruwa as a solution to the acute drinking water issue in the Hambantota District
- Nearly 12,000 people belonging to 3,000 families of Bandagirya, Keliyapura, Ketanwewa, Gonnoruwa, Andarawewa, Kuda Indiwewa and Handilla areas in Hambantota District are experiencing various economic, social and health problems from a long period of time due to the acute shortage of water in the area. As a sustainable solution to this problem, the activities are being carried out by the Government to provide 250 new water connections at a cost of Rs. 465 million as the first phase of the construction of a water system for the distribution of water from underground water tank constructed under the Ruhunupura Water Supply Project. Accordingly, the proposal made by Hon. Sajith Premadasa, the Minister of Housing and Construction, to implement the second phase of that project enabling to provide water facilities for 11,272 people through constructing a pipe borne water system with further 2,818 water connections from the Andaragasyaya underground water tank at a cost of Rs. 214.93 million, as a solution to the problem of acute shortage of water exists in the areas which do not get water facilities from the above first phase, was approved by the Cabinet.
