Archaeological Heritage Management in the Rajagala Archaeological Reserve

- Rajagalatenna Ancient Ariyakara Viharaya situated in the Uhana Divisional Secretariat Division of the Ampara District of the Eastern Province is considered to be established by the King Lajjitissa. The ruins of this monastery which is believed to be a combination of a Pabbatha Vihara and a forest monastery type are scattered in an area of 1,025 acres. The ashes of the great Arahath Mahinda is said to be interred in a Stupa found in the premises. The Rajagala Archaeological Project is being carried out as a joint project of the Department of Archaeology and the University of Sri Jayawardenapura since 2012, to arrest the deterioration process of the archeological remains in this monastery and to conserve them in order to secure them sustainably in the future and for the developemnt of the Heritage Tourism Programme.

The total estimated cost of this project is Rs.323.8 million and the sum spent on the project up to the end of 2014 amounts to Rs.55.5 million including the funds provided for by the American Embassy Fund and the University of Sri Jayawardenapura. The proposal made by Hon. Ranil Wickremasinghe, the Prime Minister and the Minister of Policy Planning, Economic Affairs, Child, Youth and Cultural Affairs, to obtain a sum of Rs. 268.3 million required for the completion of these project, from the Government Consolidated Fund, was approved by the Cabinet.
