Greater Polonnaruwa Town Development Project

- The Polonnaruwa town and its urban centres, namely, Polonnaruwa, Kaduruwela and the New Town are being developed rapidly as the Heritage City, the Commercial City and the Administrative City respectively. It has been observed that this town is catering for over 80,000 people daily and this number is increasing rapidly. The Urban Development Authority has proposed to implement a number of town development projects in line with the Town Development Plan prepared to develop Polonnaruwa Town as a Metro city, overcoming the issues such as traffic congestion, vehicle parking issue and environmental hazards. Accordingly, the proposal made by Hon. Rauff Hakeem, the Minister of Urban Development, Water Supply and Drainage, to implement the Greater Polonnaruwa Town Development Project on a priority basis, which comprises of number of projects related to fields such as Commercial Development, Heritage Conservation, Tourism Promotion, Environmental Development and Landscaping, at an estimated cost of Rs.16,650 million, was approved by the Cabinet.
