New Prison Administration Act

- The Prison Ordinance in force at present is a legislation that had been enacted in the year 1877 and the necessity of revising the provisions pertaining to prison administration therein, so as to suit the present day requirements, has been identified. Accordingly, the proposal made by Hon. (Dr.) Wijayadasa Rajapaksa, the Minister of Justice, to prepare a new Prison Administration Draft Bill, as per the recommendations made by an Experts Committee under the Chairmanship of the former Judge of the Supreme Court, Justice Hector Yapa, appointed to study the best practices prevailing under international standards in this regard and submit recommendations, was approved by the Cabinet.
