Press briefing of Cabinet Decision taken on 2015-07-08
Central Expressway

- Expeditious completion of the Central Expressway is of paramount importance to the economic development of the country. As per the recommendations of the Cabinet Sub-Committee on Economic Affairs, it has been proposed to implement its constructions through phasing out the entire length of this Expressway into four Sections, as follows:

* Section-I :
Kadawatha to Meerigama - with the loan assistance provided by the China Exim Bank;

* Section-II :
Meerigama to Kurunegala (including the Ambepussa Link) - with the loan assistance provided by the Asian Development Bank;

* Section-III :
Pothuhera to Kandy - with the loan assistance provided by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA);

* Section-IV :
Kurunegala to Dambulla - through local contractors utilizing the funds collected by local bond issue.

The proposal made by Hon. Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe, to appoint necessary Procurement Committees, Negotiation Committees and Loan Negotiation Committees, by the General Treasury, on the recommendations of the Cabinet Sub-Committee on Economic Affairs, to expedite the commencement of the project as above, was approved by the Cabinet.
