Development of the East Container Terminal and Operational Options

- The Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) has planned to enhance the container handling volume of the Colombo Port through the implementation of Colombo Ports Expansion Project and thereby to sustain a competitive advantage over the ports in the region. The civil constructions of the quay wall which is of 450 meters in length and the required yard facilities are nearing completion. The proposal made by Hon. Arjuna Ranatunga, the Minister of Ports and Shipping, to call 'Expressions of Interest' and business proposals (RFP) from the parties interested in carrying out operations as a joint venture with a private terminal operator or with a Shipping Company which the SLPA holds 51% of its ownership, after conducting a proper feasibility study and to appoint a Cabinet Appointed Negotiation Committee to determine successful proposals and make recommendations, was approved by the Cabinet.
