- The prime objectives of the National Library and Documentation Services Board are to safeguard the intellectual legacies of the nation by establishing the National Library of Sri Lanka, to encourage the use of information and communication technology, to encourage the book publications and promotion of reading, in order to create an informed society. Currently, the Board functions at the premises of No.14, Independence Avenue, Colombo 07 and the proposal made by Hon. Akila Viraj Kariyawasam, the Minister of Education, to vest the land in extend of 01 hectare situated at the above address in which this building is located, with the National Library and Documentation Services Board, free of charge, in lieu of the lease arrangement that existed to date, to carry out its non-profitable activities more successfully, was approved by the Cabinet.
