Construction of a State of the Art Cancer Hospital at the National Cancer Institute, Maharagama

- The National Cancer Institute at Maharagama is the main centre that provides cancer treatment services in Sri Lanka. A project to convert the National Cancer Institute in Maharagama into 'a state of the art cancer hospital', in order to cater to the increasing demand of the cancer care services of that Institute is already in progress, with an initial contribution of Rs.850 million and a subsequent contribution of Rs.380 million received from the Ahamed Tea Company in London, and in the meantime it is proposed to construct a Bone Marrow Testing Unit with a Theatre, to generate additional facilities in the Chemotherapy Unit and to provide the essential equipment including Bone Marrow transplanting facilities. Accordingly, the proposal made by Hon. (Dr) Rajitha Senaratne, Minister of Health and Indigenous Medicine, to bear the balance amount of Rs.233 million required for the purpose, by the Government of Sri Lanka, was approved by the Cabinet.
