Introduction of a Code of Conduct for the Members of Local Government Authorities

- There are 335 Local Government Authorities functioning in the country comprising of 23 Municipal Councils, 41 Urban Councils and 271 Pradeshiya Sabhas and 4,486 representatives are elected for these councils from the votes of the people. According to the recently made inquires, actions are being taken to conduct investigations or to issue charge sheets or to commence legal actions against 104 members of these councils on various malpractices and corruption charges. The joint proposal made by Hon. Karu Jayasuriya, the Minister of Public Administration, Local Government and Democratic Governance, and Hon. Janaka Bandara Tennakoon, the Minister of Provincial Councils and Regional Development, to introduce a Code of Conduct for the people’s representatives who have been elected and would be elected to these Local Government Authorities and to implement the said code of conduct after obtaining the views of the Provincial Councils, with a view to making a set of exemplary people's representatives devoid of wrongdoings and corruption, who would put into practice the principles of Good Governance dedicating themselves to serve the people, was approved by the Cabinet.
