Ratification of the United Nations Convention on the use of Electronic Communications in International Contracts

- The above convention was prepared by the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL) and adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in the year 2005. The objective of the Convention is to offer practical solutions for issues related to the use of electronic means of communication in connection with International contracts. Sri Lanka has signed the Convention in the year 2006 and in the preparation of Sri Lankan Electronic Transactions Act No.19 of 2006, the features and underlying principles of the Convention have been included in the Act. Accordingly, the proposal made by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mangala Samaraweera, to authorize the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to ratify the Convention, to empower the Information and Communication Technology Agency (ICTA) to undertake a review of the Electronic Transactions Act No.19 of 2006 and make recommendations for such revisions as may be required to meet the obligations under the above Convention, was approved by the Cabinet.
