- Due to the ban imposed by the European Union on the importation of fish products of Sri Lanka in November 2014, Sri Lanka has lost a market of around US $100 million. The adaptation of the necessary preliminary legal framework, strengthening of the legal enforcement capacities, training of stakeholders and educating them, establishment of a vessel monitoring system etc. for the revocation of the above ban have already been commenced. The proposal made by the Minister of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development Hon. Mahinda Amaraweera to take necessary measures to strengthen the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources for the purpose, was approved by the Cabinet.
