- The present government in its program for a 'Maithri Administration' proposed to increase women representation by a minimum of 25% in the political decision making process. Accordingly, the proposal made by the Minister of Provincial Councils and Regional Development Hon. Janaka Bandara Tennakoon to draft legislation to amend the Provincial Councils Elections Act, No.02 of 1988 including provision to comprise not less than a 30% of women representation of the total number of candidates in each nomination paper submitted by the political parties or groups at a Provincial Council Election, was approved by the Cabinet.
