- Out of the 335 local authorities, the term of office of the 234 local authorities, functional at present is due to end on 2015?05?15, the term of office of 65 local authorities is due to end on 2015?07?31, the term of office of 21 local authorities is due to end on 2015?10?16 and the term of office of 02 local authorities is due to end on 2015?10?31. There is the possibility of either to extend or shorten the term of office of these institutions governed by the Municipal Councils Ordinance, Urban Councils Ordinance and the Pradeshiya Sabas Act under the provisions therein. However, the Minister of Public Administration, Local Government and Democratic Governance, Hon. Karu Jayasuriya brought to the attention of the Cabinet that, since there is a possibility of electing the members to local bodies through an election under the mixed electoral system based on electoral divisions in future, the term of office of the local bodies will be allowed to lapse without being extended.
