Increase of Wages of the Private Sector

- The proposal made by the Minister of Labour, Hon. S.B. Navinne to draft legislation for the above purpose taken into consideration the necessity of introducing a law similar to the methodology adopted in the Budgetary Relief Allowance Act, No.36 of 2005, in principle, with the objective of providing an expeditious solution to the wage increase issue relating to the Private Sector Employees, was approved by the Cabinet. It has been proposed to incorporate the following provisions in the draft Bill to be implemented:

* The minimum monthly wage of all employees of the Private Sector will be Rs.10,000/- and accordingly, the minimum daily wage will be Rs. 400/-

* The above will be implemented as the basic wage with effect from 01st May 2015.

* As the first step of increasing the wages of Private Sector Employees by Rs.2,500/-, their present wage will be increased by Rs.1,500/- with effect from 01?05?2015 and accordingly, the wage of the daily paid employees will also be increased by Rs.60/-.

* The second step will be implemented with effect from 01?01?2016 and the wage paid as at 31?12?2015 will be increased by another Rs.1,000/- and accordingly, the wage of the daily paid employees will also be increased by Rs.40/-.
