Amendment of the Merchant Shipping Act, No.52 of 1971 in order to bring it in line with the International Maritime Organization (IMO) International Conventions

- The member States should act in accordance with the 'Mandatory Conventions' of the IMO which is the International Organization mandated by the United Nations to deal with shipping activities. Accordingly, the proposal made by the Minister of Ports and Shipping, Hon. Arjuna Ranatunga to draft amendments to amend the Merchant Shipping Act, No.52 of 1971 for the enactment of laws necessary for the successful implementation of the conventions of the IMO, was approved by the Cabinet.
