- In view of the public opinion expressed at the last Presidential election and the common request made by the political parties, His Excellency the President presented to the Cabinet a Draft Proposal containing the necessary provisions to introduce a Mixed Electoral System which enables the election of Members of Parliament for each and every constituency and electorate directly and also in proportionate to the votes gain by respective political parties, discarding the existing preferential voting system from the Electoral System of Sri Lanka. The Cabinet decided to present the constitutional amendments for a new Electoral System after obtaining the views of the all parties concerned, based on the above draft proposal.
