- The Government, having taken into consideration the fact that the number of Cancer Patients in the country is increasing rapidly, has identified the establishment of high quality Radiotherapy equipment with high energy radiation in the main cancer centres as a matter of high priority. Accordingly, the proposal made by the Minister of Health and Indigenous Medicine, Hon. Rajitha Senaratne to procure the Linear Accelerators, Brachy Therapy Units and CT Simulators for the National Cancer Institute, Maharagama and also for the Cancer Centres at General Hospital-Kandy, Teaching Hospital-Jaffna, Teaching Hospital-Karapitiya and the Teaching Hospital-Batticaloa, under the Phase I of the above Project, during the period from 2015 to 2017, utilizing the aids of the World Bank and funds of the Government of Sri Lanka, was approved by the Cabinet.
