- A project titled the 'Bibile Sugar Development Project' is expected to be implemented within the Divisional Secretary's Divisions of Ridimaliyadda in the Badulla District and Padiyathalawa and Mahaoya Divisional Secretary's Divisions of Ampara District to cultivate sugar canes mainly for the manufacture of sugar and cultivation of mixed crops, rearing milch cows, cultivation of Gliricidia and to generate renewable energy with the use of discarded parts of Gliricidia stems involving the participation of farmers of the respective areas. In this endevour, a block of land of 2.5 hectares is given to each farmer living in the area to generate a sustainable income and the income so anticipated for each family will be around Rs.60,000 to Rs.80,000 per month. Accordingly, the proposal made by the Minister of Plantation Industries, Hon. Lakshman Kiriella to implement the above project and to proceed with its activities was approved by the Cabinet in principle.
