- Under the Second Phase of the Hambanthota Port Project, 491.5 hectares of lands have been identified for acquisition and these lands are to be utilized for the Port development activities and as well as for the creation of industries related to the Port. There are about 400 families presently residing in these lands which are to be acquired and the proposal made by Hon. Arjuna Ranatunga, the Minister of Ports and Shipping, to provide them with alternative lands and compensation, was approved by the Cabinet.
