- On a request made by the People's Republic of China in December 2013, Sri Lanka participated in multilateral consultation meetings as a founder member of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank planned to be established by the end of the year 2015. Along with the 21 nations who expressed their willingness to join the bank as founder members, Sri Lanka signed the relevant Memorandum of Understanding on 24th October 2014. Accordingly, Hon. Ranil Wickremasinghe, the Prime Minister, as the Minister of Policy Planning, Economic Affairs, Child, Youth and Cultural Affairs informed the Cabinet that Sri Lanka too has become eligible to participate in the negotiation process for the establishment of the bank.
