Implementation of Warehouse Receipts Financing System for Storage of Farm Produce by Farmers in the Dry Zone Districts of the Country

- The construction of warehouses in the districts of Anuradhapura, Moneragala and Mannar, has been commenced under Phase I of the Warehouse Receipts Financing Mechanism introduced by the Government of Sri Lanka with a grant assistance from the World Bank, innovated a mechanism with a view to providing cultivators in the dry zone with high quality storage facilities to secure a higher income and profit for them by selling their produce in the off season rather than in the harvesting season and to providing them with financial assistance for the purpose.

The construction of the first warehouse under this programme inaugurated in the Divisional Secretary's Division of Galenbindunuwewa in the Anuradhapura district, has by now been completed and the proposal made by Hon. Ravi Karunanayake, Minister of Finance, to enter into a Management Service Agreement with the Divisional Development Bank and appoint the District Secretary Anuradhapura, as the authorized operator thereof, was approved by the Cabinet
