Press briefing of Cabinet Decision taken on 2015-02-11
Committee for Reviewing Relocation and Evictions by the Urban Development Authority in the City of Colombo

- based on a survey carried out by the former Ministry of Defence and Urban Development at that time in 2010 as a part of its Urban Regeneration Project and other activities in the Colombo City, the Urban Development Authority initiated action to evict and relocate around 68,000 families who lived in the undeserved settlements. A large number of complaints have been received in this regard by the Ministry of Urban Development, Water Supply and Drainage, in the course of the last two weeks from the families affected in the process and the concerned citizens. As such, the proposal made by the Minister of Urban Development, Water Supply and Drainage, Hon. Rahuff Hakeem to set up a Committee comprising of representatives from the relevant Government Institutions to review all aspects pertaining to eviction and location of families and provide relief expeditiously to those who deserve and to make recommendations for far reaching solutions for the problems involved, was approved by the Cabinet.

It was further decided that the activities of this Officials' Committee should be carried out under the supervision of the Committee comprising of the following three Ministers in order to ensure that the grievances of the parties aggrieved are properly addressed during the above process.

* Minister Hon. Ravi Karunanayake
* State Minister Hon. (Mrs.) Rose Senanayake
* Deputy Minister Hon. Eran Wickramaratne
