- the draft Bill submitted by the Minister of Health and Indigenous Medicine Hon. (Dr.) Rajitha Senaratne to amend Section 34 of the National Authority on Tobacco and Alcohol Act to enable the display of health warnings describing the harmful effects of tobacco use on packages of tobacco products to cover 80% of their surface, to be presented in Parliament as an urgent Bill in the national interest in terms of Article 122 of the Constitution, was approved by the Cabinet. In addition to the above amendment the fine of Rs.2,000/- and the imprisonment of one (01) year imposed in the original Act are to be amended to a fine of Rs.50,000/- and an imprisonment of one (01) year and provisions are also to be included to change the pictorial warnings recommended by the Authority established for this purpose every six (06) months.
