- the Government has taken initiatives for digitalization of terrestrial television broadcasting system in order to increase information accessibility of people covering the entire country by promoting the effective utilization of frequency resources. This project intends to offer enhanced services such as, better picture and sound quality and a wider choice of channels and programmes for users while contributing to reduce the operation and transmission cost of television broadcasters and also to upgrade the Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation. The Government of Japan has agreed to provide a loan of JPY 13,717 million (approximately Rs.17,396 million) through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) for this purpose. The proposal made by H.E. the President, in his capacity as the Minister of Finance and Planning, to proceed with the related activities pertaining to the loan, was approved by the Cabinet.
