Guaranteed Price for Potatoes, Big Onions and Dried Chillies as proposed in the Budget 2014 - the Government aims to expand domestic agriculture production, ensuring a reasonable price for agricultural produce and creating an uninterrupted access to competitive markets both in Sri Lanka and abroad for value added agricultural products. To meet the above targets, it is proposed to expand the extent under cultivation, use high yielding seeds, utilize improved water management systems, introduce efficient farm management techniques, reduce wastage in transport and provide modern storage facilities. It is proposed to create 50% self sufficiency in potatoes, big onions and dried chillies by 2015 and to export the surplus production by 2020. Accordingly, the proposal made by H.E. the President, in his capacity as the Minister of Finance and Planning, to introduce a guaranteed price for these food items as indicated below and to proceed with the relevant activities, was approved by the Cabinet: |
