- it has been planned to distribute vegetable seeds and plants under Phase V of the Divi Neguma National Development Programme now being implemented with the objective of developing home gardens as productive economic units ensuring food and nutrition security of the people and to make the country self sufficient to a great extent in vegetables and fruits, thereby minimizing food and fruits imports. The proposal made by Hon. Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena, Minister of Agriculture, to procure plants required for the above programme from the nurseries of the Department of Agriculture and those registered with the Department and to proceed with the relevant activities, was approved by the Cabinet.
