Project on Promoting Sustainable Biomass Energy Production and Modern Bio-Energy Technologies in Sri Lanka
- at present, hydro power and thermal power is generated in Sri Lanka using hydro potential, coal and fossil fuels. In addition to the above, wind, solar and biomass are used to generate electricity in a smaller scale. The Ministry of Environment and Renewable Energy has taken measures to obtain Grant Funding for a five year project (2013 - 2017) with an estimated cost of US $1.9 million from the Global Environment Facility (GEF) through the intervention of the United Nations' Development Programme (UNDP) and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) for Promoting Sustainable Biomass Energy Production and Modern Bio Energy technologies in Sri Lanka. The proposal made by Hon. Susil Premajayantha, Minister of Environment and Renewable Energy, to proceed with the project, was approved by the Cabinet.
