- the present student population at the University of Jaffna is around 5700.  The Faculties of Science, Arts (including the Division of Law), Management Studies & Commerce, and Medicine (including the Division of Allied Health Science) of the University and the Institutes of Siddha Medicine and Ramanathan Academy of Fine Arts are established in Jaffna.   It has been identified as a crucial development project to uplift the standard of the University of Jaffna and also accommodate the  increasing student population. Therefore, the proposal made by Hon. S.B. Dissanayake, Minister of Higher Education, to purchase an identified block of land with the view to expanding the activities of the University, was approved by the Cabinet.
